World Championship started

After three days of qualification with 114 men and 29 women is this morning, the World Championship 9-ball officially started by the president of the World Pool-Billiard Association, Jurgen Sandman. For Sandman was this his last official handling, because of professional occupation, he has to lay down is mandate as president.  

Women

The qualification tournament of the women was completely dominated by the Japanese. With the  victory of Etsuko Kubota, Mika Muneta, Mitsumi Kubota, Kimiko Yamauchi, Rika Takahashi and Keiko Nishimura were allready 6 of the 8 places taken. The two other places wend to German Sandra Ortner and Karen Corr from England. The biggest surprise came from Ortner when she defeted World Champion Gerda Hofstätter from Austria with 9/3.  

Men

Also in the men’s qualification tournament came the surprise from the German player Sven Paurisch, has he defeted Niclas Bergendorff from Sweden with 11/8. Steve Knight (England) was too weak for Sten Järledal (Sweden) 9/11 and Evgenij Stalev (Russia) lost to Haruyoshi Hinokiyama (Japan) with 7/11. Torsten Hohmann from Germany lost to Imran Majid (England) 9/11. Riko Diks (Netherlands) started weak but quickly regain is strength and won with 11/4 from Tommy Donlon (England). Karol Augustynowicz from Poland lost with the smallest difference from France Eric Robaine 10/11. He was the 17the player to qualified as the 18the had a walk-over because of a forfait of a player who didn’t turn op.
