The 2000 Mosconi Cup
14-17/12/2000 [Day 1][Day 2][Day 3][Day 4]
Europe v America  9-Ball Pool Challenge
EUROPE 4 - 5 USA  (15 december 2000)
The European team, lead by captain Ralf 'The Kaiser' Souquet, had the better of the Americans in a tense afternoon's play at the 2000 Acclaim Mosconi Cup as they took two of the three doubles matches to square it at three points apiece.

Souquet looked hard at yesterday's pairings and decided to change two of them; a decision which paid dividends as the Steve Davis / Mika Immonen team disposed of arguably the strongest American pairing of Strickland and Deuel in the second match of the afternoon.

Earlier, Team America increased their lead to two points as Johnny Archer and Shannon Daulton made mince meat of Steve Knight and Marcus Chamat in a match in which the Americans brilliance was equalled only by the Europeans' lack of good luck.

In the final match, the German double of Engert and Souquet continued their winning run in a match that was conspicuous for the twitching errors of Michael Coltrain. It almost seems that any semi-tough shot under pressure is a guaranteed miss for the likeable cueist from North Carolina, and the European players are already queuing up to meet him in tonight's singles.

With everything to play for, the event continues tonight here at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

FULL RESULTS
Steve Knight / Marcus Chamat 0 - 5 Johnny Archer / Shannon Daulton
Steve Davis / Mika Immonen 5 - 2 Earl Strickland / Corey Deuel
Ralf Souquet / Thomas Engert 5 - 2 Jeremy Jones / Michael Coltrain

Evening Session

Steve Davis, whose exploits at the 2000 World Pool Championship last July confirmed his status as a world class pool player, put in another miracle performance here at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, to keep European hopes alive at the 2000 Acclaim Mosconi Cup.

Davis, 43, found himself 4 - 1 down in a race to five contest against top American Jeremy Jones but somehow managed to win four racks on the spin to take the match 5 - 4. It left Europe 5 - 4 down after two sessions but the alternative score of 6 - 3 would have left Euro hopes looking slim indeed.

What made Davis' comeback all the more incredible was that the matches at the Mosconi Cup are played on an alternate break basis, which means that however well you play, your opponent will always get back to the table.

Commented Davis, " That took some doing! At 4 - 1 down I knew I had to convert every chance I had and then rely on Jeremy breaking down when he got to the table. I just concentrated as hard as I could and went for it. It's great to play in front of the type of crowds you get at the York Hall and the eruption at the end of the match was quite magnificent. There is everything to play for now and I still believe that we can win the Mosconi Cup."

Earlier, debutant Marcus Chamat ( Sweden) lost out to Michael Coltrain in the battle of the twitchers. Chamat lead 3 - 1 and had a chance to make it 4 - 1 but failed to take the opportunity. Coltrain, who has had a miserable tournament so far, came good, banished the nerves and ran out a 5 - 3 winner.

1990's Player of the Decade Johnny Archer showed what a class act he is in disposing of Mika Immonen. Archer played perfect pool and although Immonen seldom made mistakes it was an uphill battle against the man from Atlanta.

Play continues tomorrow afternoon with three doubles matches and then in the evening with three more singles matches.

FULL RESULTS
Marcus Chamat (Sweden) 3 - 5 Michael Coltrain
Mika Immonen (Finland) 3 - 5 Johnny Archer
Steve Davis (England) 5 - 4 Jeremy Jones

Each match is a race to 5, alternate break and the first side to reach 12 points wins the Cup.
