World Pool League Back In Poland

Press Release: 16th November 2001SaturdaySundayBack

Warsaw, Poland

In a high-quality match-up defending champion Steve Knight and reigning World Champ Mika Immonen opened proceedings in the 2001 World Pool League in a match that saw Immonen take both points and head Group 2.

With the arena at the University of Warsaw jam-packed with an expectant Polish public, Knight won the lag and took the first rack in this best-of-ten match-up. The first four went with the break as neither  player missed a ball, but the Knight Rider made the games first mistake in the fifth frame to let Immonen lead 3-2.

The Iceman then turned the screw to take the next  three racks which gave him both points. Knight rallied, taking the last two to keep the score respectable but the honours went to the Finn.

Steve Davis opened his account here with a solid win over European Champion Rico Diks of Holland. Davis is becoming increasingly confident as a pool player, shot into a quick 6 - 1 lead to grab both points and although Rico pulled a couple of racks back at the end, it was Romford Slim's night.

In the final match of the evening, Efren Reyes, fresh from his record-breaking US$165,000 pay day in Tokyo on Wednesday night, showed no mercy to improving young Pole Radoslaw Babica as he came home a good value 7 - 3 winner. Reyes, who was backed by a contingent of his countrymen in the audience, cashed in whenever the 22 year-old from Poznan made an error.

The Pokermillion.com World Pool League features eight players in two groups of four competing in a League format for a US$50,000 prize-fund. The top two from each group go into Sunday night's semi-finals and final.
