World Pool League Back In Poland

Press Release: 18th November 2001FridaySaturdayFinalBack

Warsaw, Poland

With Mika Immonen, Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante through to this evening's World Pool League semi-finals, the last spot will be determined by the outcome of this afternoon's final Group One match between Earl Strickland (USA) and Rico Diks of Holland

Steve Davis is still in the shake-up after his thrilling 5 - 5 draw with Bustamante which was well appreciated by a packed crowd at the University of Warsaw. Davis, who had determination written all over his face, went into a
4 - 2 lead, knowing that he needed at least a draw to keep his hopes alive.
Francisco, backed by some enthusiastic Filipinos in the audience, took the next three racks to go into a 5-4 lead but justice was served when Romford Slim took the final rack for a share of the spoils.

Commented Davis; " It's down to Rico now. If he can win or draw, I go through."

Mika Immonen maintained his 100% record here at the World Pool League with a solid 6 - 4 win over Efren Reyes of the Philippines. That win means that Immonen tops Group 2 and Reyes finishes in the runners-up spot.

With both players already through, and the pressure off, the stage was set for an exhibition and both players delighted the Warsaw crowd with some quality shot-making. In the end though it was Mika, who made the fewer
mistakes who took the points.

Reyes faces Bustamante in tonight's race-to-seven semi-final whilst Immonen plays either Steve Davis or Earl Strickland.

Radoslaw Babica 0 1 2 12 18 1

Steve Davis will be buying Rico Diks a large drink tonight after the latter's stellar performance in putting paid to Earl Strickland's World Pool League hopes at the University of Warsaw this afternoon.

Strickland found himself in a win or bust situation after a sloppy first match on Saturday afternoon, but the London-based Dutchman held his nerve to come from 4- 3 down to win 6-4. That meant that Steve Davis, watching the match in the player's lounge clinched second place and a semi-final match-up against World Champion Mika Immonen.

Diks' win placed him above Strickland in the final standings. Diks takes home $3.000 and Strickland $2.000.
