Press Release
MATCHROOM SPORT is delighted to announce that the 2002 World Pool
Championship will be taking place at the Cardiff International Arena for
the fourth consecutive year as 128 players from over 40 countries go
head-to-head for the $300,000 prize-fund in what is the world's biggest
pool tournament.
IN what will be one of the strongest fields ever assembled, players
from countries as diverse as Costa Rica, India, and the Czech Republic
will all be competing as well as the stars from pool's major league
nations such as the USA, Germany, Philippines and Taiwan.
The Championship runs from 13th - 21st July and global stars like Earl
'the Pearl' Strickland, Efren Reyes of the Philippines, Germany's Ralf
'the Kaiser' Souquet and defending champ, Mika 'Iceman' Immonen of Finland
will all be there.
On the home front 2000 Quarter Finalist Steve 'Romford Slim' Davis will
lead the British challenge that includes 2000 World Snooker Champion Mark
Williams, Jimmy White, 1999 Quarter Finalist Steve Knight and a host of
emerging British talent who are making names for themselves in one of the
UK's fastest growing sports.
The Championship breaks off at 11am on Saturday 13th July as the
opening group games get underway and culminates on the evening of Sunday
21st when the final will be played out and the destination of the World
Championship and the winners cheque of $65,000 will be decided.
As in previous years, tickets for the World Pool Championship are free
for the first eight days of the tournament and are available in person
from the CIA Box Office or on 02920 224488.
The World Pool Championship is live throughout on Sky Sports in the UK
and that adds up to over 60 hours of live coverage over the nine days. The
Championship is also live to over 60 countries across Asia on ESPN Star
where pool is one of the top-rated sports in countries like Taiwan and the
Philippines.
In addition, the World Pool Championship is broadcast in Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, the Middle East and various
European countries in highlights form.
The tournament is sanctioned by the World Pool Association, the sport's
governing body, who administer pool across the world. For players who have
not made it through via international ranking lists, there is a series of
open qualifying events in Bristol starting on Saturday 6th July. Eleven
places are available and it is a chance for aspirational club players to
rub shoulders with the greats of the game.
Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, "What a
wonderful tournaments this is and we are all looking forward to July.
Every year we take this tournament further and further and 2002 is no
exception. This is a genuine global event with participants from all over
the world as well as a huge TV viewership not only in the UK but also in
the Far East where pool is big news. Don't make the mistake of comparing
pool with snooker; they are worlds apart with biggest difference being
that pool is international and it is FUN!"
