PRESSRELEASE 16/06/2003

With the announcements at 160 for this event, it was sure that it was going to be tough. Maybe
a few thought ”Too tough” as a small amount of cancellations came at the last minute. However
tough it was, it did not deter one young lady from trying to compete with the best in Europe.
Helen Künzli from Switzerland lost both matches straight away, i asked her ” how did it feel to
play here”, even though she made a quick exit she replied ” it was great, a great experience to
play with these players”. In total, 142 players from 22 countries braved the 30 degrees heat here
in Austria which by far is still a great number of players.
In the early rounds there was no big shocks but eventually names like Feijn, Ortmann Lely,
Nielsen and co were sent to the losers bracket. Even with so many players, 2 Austrians made it
through to the last 32 which made the home fans happy.
In the knockout stage first round, saw Tom Storm up against Niels Feijn with Feijn winning that
battle but then losing to his fellow countryman Alex Lely. Lely made it to the semi`s but found
Niclas Bergendorff too strong losing that 9-4. The same score was in the other semi too,
Thorsten Hohmann D and Marko Lohtander FIN, Thorsten comming out on top. In the last 8,
there was 6 different countries represented, this is becoming a trend within the Euro tour which
proves that all countries are producing top players now days. So the final was set, Bergendorff
against first time finalist Hohmann. It looked like that Thorston would romp away with victory,
he took an early lead then increased the pressure on Niclas by going 8-3 up. Finding something
extra, Niclas amazingly pulled back to level at 8-8, showing his experience, Niclas took the final
frame and 1st place. With this win, Niclas moves up to 2nd in the Euro tour rankings and books
his place in Tokio.

Final Ranking:
1°  Niklas Bergendorff SWE
2°  Thorsten Hohmann GER
3°  Alex Lely NED
3°  Marko Lothander FIN
