EPBF European Weelchair Tour
Dave & Buster´s,
Bristol/Great Britain
February 25-27, 2000
´European Wheelchair Tour’ in Great Britain
The swedish player is undefeated after three events
The ´1st New Millennium 9-Ball Open’ in the English town
of Bristol was held from the 25th
to the 27th February and was the first meeting of the new year for
European wheelchair Billiard players. And so, like 1999 ended, the new year 2000
started: with a win for an unbeatable Henrik Larsson from Sweden. For everybody
a big surprise was Fred Dinsmore (Ireland) placed second in this ranking event
followed by Kurt Deklerck (Belgium) and Tankred Volkmer (Germany).
A perfectly organised tournament
waited for the 27 participants coming from seven nations. Peter Haslam and his
Team with Daniel Luton, Maurice Job and Jeff Branson were responsible on the
fourth Tour-Stop for new standards: with the ´Aztec Shire Inn´ a welcome hotel
and a great atmosphere at the venue ´Dave & Buster´s´. So the games started
on Friday morning after the opening ceremony on a high level. A large number of
new players on the tour, mostly Snooker players from England on home ground, brought the pool-players one by
one under pressure. But still the Top Four-Players Larsson, Deklerck, Schranz
and Volkmer played consistently themselves untill the semifinal of the winners
bracket. Therefore, there were no big surprises, But then all the attentions
went to the matches of Larsson/Volkmer and Deklerck/Schranz, two players in the
losers bracket played a great tournament. Aslam Abubaker (England) and Fred
Dinsmore (Ireland) took their chances and played themselves into the last six.
But whilst Abubaker against Volkmer (who lost 3:7 against Larsson) packed his
cue-case, Dinsmore continued his series of victories against the Austrian
Schranz (who lost 1:7 against Deklerck). On the final day, the sympathetic
Irish wanted Dinsore to have it all. With 7:4 against Volkmer and the 7:6-Revenge
against Deklerck he went into the final. Here Ranking-leader Henrik Larsson
waited for him. But Larsson (in the three last events undefeated) lost his
concentration after quickly going into a 4:1 lead and couldn't lose Dinsmore.
Then the grand final was balanced, but the three games difference stayed till
the end of the 9:6 final score for Larsson. But it was not enough that he
showed his knowledge in the final, Larsson then demonstrated a trick-shot
exhibition for the numerous VIP´s, players and onlookers.
At the closing banquet Mrs. Jo
Byron, Vice-Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, and Mrs. Linda Crumlin of
the main-sponsor Coloplast thanked everyone for the great competitiveness and
fair-play of all participants. Everybody received trophies and medals and the
first eight ranked players a total prize money of 1.100 English Pounds. That
there was a long celebration till into the night was for sure.
