BIG GUNS MAKE THEIR MOVES IN SPAIN

Predator Euro Tour Series

Gandia, Spain

2026 Revora Spanish Open

SPANISH OPEN UP AND RUNNING IN GANDIA

30th October 2026

PLAY CONTINUED IN Gandia at the Revora Spanish Open as the respective fields whittled down in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Taking place in Gandia, it is the final event on the 2026 Predator Euro Tour calendar. The men’s event is now halfway through, while today was the opening day for the women.

The Polish squad were out in force in Gandia but it was the two Qatar World Cup 10-Ball semi-finalists, Daniel Maciol and Wojciech Szewczyk who caught the early attention. Due to their late arrival in Spain, tournament organisers had shunted their opening matches into day two as they made the journey from Doha to Gandia, via Barcelona to arrive in the morning.

Szewczyk, perhaps with the tougher draw, got past Niklas Dohr (GER) by 9-4 and then was pushed all the way by Slovakian youngster Timothei Furko, prevailing in a 25-minute deciding rack. A win over Walter Laikre put him into the last 32.

Maciol had an easier ride with three comfortable wins – 9-2, 9-0 and 9-2 – to reach the single elimination stage. He was still carrying the hangover of a very disappointing semi-final defeat to AJ Manas in Qatar when he was in a strong winning position, but dug in to progress.

He said, “I’m grateful that I’m able to play winners’ round so a big thank you to organisers for what they did for players who participated in Qatar Open so yeah, I’m happy to be able to play and also to win through.

“Yesterday was one of the toughest losses of my career, definitely so it wasn’t easy for me, and actually Wojciech as well so we just tried to come here with a better mindset and get some rest as soon as possible and try and play our best. I just try and play my best game and to be quicker on the table like keep my energy better and hopefully try to win my matches today,” he added.

The big Spanish hopes in both men’s and women’s tournaments are all around for Saturday. David Alcaide made his way into the last 32 with nerve-wracking 9-8 win over Dennis Laszkowski (GER) while Francisco Sanchez Ruiz won his three matches to make the straight knock-out but not without a huge battle against Petr Urban (CZE) that went to a deciding rack.

In the women’s event, Mayte Ropero enjoyed two wins to advance to Saturday’s Winners’ Qualification round although by her own admission she wasn’t at her peak. She defeated Sabrina Cisternino (SUI) by 7-5 and followed that up with a hill-hill victory over Nina Torvund of Norway.

Commented Mayte, “Always the first round is a tough match especially here in Spain and I played bad but this time I win and I hope the next match is better. The table is not too difficult, not too easy and the balance is perfect. It’s different playing at home, the pressure is different, maybe it’s difficult. I’ll try my best and I hope tomorrow is better.”

One player hitting the heights this year is Pia Filler. A two-time winner this year on Europe’s premier tour, she also had a huge win in Asia, lifting the Poison Saigon Women’s 9-Ball Open in September as she beat a host of top players to prevail. She now tops the Euro Tour rankings as well as holding the No.1 spot in the WPA World Rankings.

She said, “It’s obviously a great feeling and I just see it in a positive way it gives me a lot of confidence and I’m very happy about it. I just have very high expectations of myself all the time so it doesn’t really matter to me as I want to deliver my game and play my best always so really, I enjoy being No.1

"I’ve been fighting so long to win a PBS event and I’ve lost so many quarter finals before and I wanted it so so bad and I was working so hard on it so going there I just tried to, just like a Euro Tour, ball-by-ball, match-by-match, I was very focused and positive all the time.

“I never played perfect and you’re always going to make mistakes but I was believing in myself that I could do it and in the end I did. I was just very happy about winning my first one and now I’m hungry for more. My No.1 goal is winning the individual World Championship but I think it’s just a matter of time and being No.1 shows me that I’m capable of doing it so now I’ll just keep going and I don’t have a doubt that it’s going to happen at one point.”

Action resumes with Losers’ Qualification in the men’s tournament at 9.00 on Saturday. The women start with the remaining matches in Losers’ Round 2, followed by Winners’ Qualification at 11.00. As of 2026, WPA World Ranking points are now available on both men’s and women’s Predator Euro Tours.
