BIG GUNS ARE BLAZING IN GANDIA

31st October 2026

WE’RE DOWN TO the final eight players in both men’s and women’s events at the Revora Spanish Open. Taking place in Gandia, it is the final event on the 2026 Predator Euro Tour calendar, as players jostle to see who will top the year-end rankings.

There are plenty of big guns left in the two tournaments but none bigger than the highly-decorated Francisco Sanchez Ruiz. He put paid to 17-year-old Swedish youngster Gabriel Aspholm’s hopes with an 11-0 drubbing. Earlier, the Swede had scored a major upset as he dumped Daniel Maciol out of the competition.

Just under a year ago, Sanchez Ruiz won the Little Monster Men’s International Open on the Pro Billiard Series in this same building and he’s on track to add another trophy to his impressive collection.

He said, “When I play here in Spain it’s always amazing. I had good memories of last year in Gandia and I have all my people here so it’s an amazing feeling to be playing at home and I can’t wait for tomorrow.

“Tonight I played almost perfect, I had all the rolls and I was breaking good, had position for the next ball which is very important but tomorrow’s going to be a new day. It’s hard sometimes, you play good and you lose and it doesn’t matter. You have to keep improving every time because there’s so many good players around the world. I just to try to have fun. Work hard and enjoy every single moment.”

Another big gun and looking to land his second Euro Tour title of the year is Wojciech Szewczyk who came through a bruising encounter with countryman Wiktor Zielinski, prevailing 11-9. Szewczyk came to the event on an overnight from Qatar and played his first three matches straight off the plane.

He said, “Wiktor is a great competitor, never gives an easy match and it was going back and forth. I was 7-9 down and got really lucky because I played some bad shots at that score. Later on, I played pretty good to close it out 11-9.

“I don’t think I’ve recovered (from the journey) just yet. The recovery time will come after this tournament so I’m not thinking about fatigue.

“That would be a dream and would be really cool to win more than one Euro Tour in a season. I’ve played two finals already also, I believe so let’s see how it goes. I’m deep because I’m in the quarter-finals but three tough matches to go so not thinking about the finish line just yet,” he added.

Pia Filler looks to be the person to beat in the women’s event as she waltzed past Jolien Schuurman 9-1 but there are plenty of talented players lining up for a Sunday night tilt at the trophy. Ina Kaplan, who enjoyed a purple patch on the Euro Tour in 2024 & ‘25 made her way into the last eight courtesy of a 9-4 win over Poland’s Oktawia Brodecka. She can now look forward to Pia Filler on Sunday morning.

She said, “At this point I just want to enjoy the matches and enjoy playing pool because last time in Treviso I wasn’t feeling good at all and I was really quite negative for me – I’m always trying to be positive about everything that happens on the table - but now I’m feeling better and enjoying the game again.”

Another player trending in an upward direction is London-based Ukrainian Daria Siranchuk, who defeated Li Yongxi, one of two Chinese players in the field. Siranchuk reached her first ever semi-final in the Turkish Open earlier in the year and has a chance to match that or go better against Oliwia Zalewska tomorrow.

Commented Daria, “So far, I’m really happy with my game. It just depends if I’m getting rolls and if I’m able to play my game. I felt like it’s been a great year and I’ve made a lot of progress both on and off the table and I played a lot of heyball as well which helped me in pool as well. I feel like I’m getting close to getting further and further in the events which gives me more confidence in any event I play.”

Linnea Hjalmarstrom got past Monika Zabek (POL) to advance to her third quarter-final of the year where she faces Mayte Ropero tomorrow. The Swedish player is not long out of youth pool and has decided to devote herself to the game full-time.

She said, “It was a struggle match for both of us; we gave each other opportunities and we both took them and we both missed opportunities so it’s a game to improve tomorrow but I’m happy to get the win.

“I’m happy with the three quarter-finals this year, I’m not really focused on results but three quarter-finals and keeping consistency is just a sign that I’m doing something good. I’m happy to get this far but I always want to get further.

“I just graduated so I keep busy and play pool everyday now and my focus is on pool and I want to give myself the full chance of going for it and the timing is good. I can feel myself being more mentally clear and focused and my game improving fast,” she concluded.

The last day of the Revora Spanish Open starts at 10.00 with the quarter-finals in both divisions. The semi-finals are at 13.00 and 16.00 with the championship matches off at 20.00. As of 2026, WPA World Ranking points are now available on both men’s and women’s Predator Euro Tours.
